Heather's Artwork

Heather Dekker graduated from Sheridan College's Illustration Program in 1990.  "One of the many really good things about the program at Sheridan is it really taught me how to draw and to see what I am drawing.  It gave me many hours working in life drawing and structural drawing which to me is the basis of being able to accurately portray my subjects.  As well it offered a variety of painting, printmaking and designing programs where you learned composition, colour theory and technique.  It is one of the reasons today I like experimenting with the mediums and I continually thrive to push the boundariies of what I know.  I love my job because I never stop learning."

When Heather opened the Creative Palette she knew it would be hard work, but she had no idea how much she would enjoy helping others with their creative pursuits. "I hope I can help artists like myself experience the joy of sharing their art with others. The thing I have come to realize is that it is the joy of sharing what I love to do with others, whether through my classes, my framing or my paintings, is ultimately the best part of my days here."

In the Thornton location Heather's work was on display but in the new location on Wellington St. her display area is limited.  Heather is focused on providing the best art classes and picture framing service in Barrie.  Her work will be see in the coming years at festivals like Kempenfest, Barrie Studio Tours and the Sugar Plum Festival and the Molson Centre Christmas show.  If you are interested in any of Heather's work to purchase please feel free to contact her directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. Heather's History

Heather received her diploma in illustration from Sheridan College in 1990. "I put myself through college working in art galleries and framing shops. I enjoyed learning the trade of picture framing and found the whole process from choosing the mats and frame to the actual process of cutting mats and joining frames quite creative. "After graduating, Heather became a freelance commercial artist. "I loved being able to learn about packaging, doll design, and book making. I spent a lot of time painting Anne of Green Gables and other characters in watercolor.   I was the illustrator and designer for the original Canadian Maplelea Doll.  It was such a blessing to be able to do what I love.

"When the economy took a turn I was laid off and needed to look for other work.  It was a sad time and difficult to find work.  I was able to continue to use some of my skills and found partime work in framing shops and galleries.  I also had the opportunity to work for the Newmarket School of Fine Art where I learned the art of teaching others.  There were an amazing group of artists who worked at this school and I was able to learn some of their techniques and perfected my ability to teach art."

"In May of 2010 I opened the Creative Palette in Thornton.  I opened an art gallery, offered art classes and picture framing in hopes of finding a way to support myself with my love of art.  On April 8th, 2015, I opened my new location in a home-based business at 36 Wellington St. West in Barrie.  Here I will focus on my art classes and my picture framing service and I can hopefully find time to create more so I can share my knowledge with others." I look forward to offering better workshops for adults and the best prices and quality in my picture framing service."

"One word: 'Awesome!' Heather’s skills & talent as an artist combined with her warm, enthusiastic inclusive approach have afforded my daughter to grow and explore her creative passion. The variety of mediums helped her to try new things and create pieces she is truly proud to show. The technique and theory help to round out her whole learning experience. Thank you Heather!" "Our daughter has thoroughly enjoyed every class that she’s taken with Heather. So much so, that she invited friends to an art class birthday party. Lots of fun! It’s been a great balance to add a creative activity to her extra-curricular activities." Ruth Rankin

"My daughter loves coming to art class with Heather. She loves it so much she has asked to join a second class per week. The pieces she has brought home are beautiful. Our favorite painting is on our fireplace mantel so we can see and enjoy it every day. Heather is very talented and works well with the children. We would recommend this class to everyone."
